Maryland Sets Up Environmental Registry

ANNAPOLIS, Md.—Companies and organizations that implement at least five environmental practices and submit at least one quantitative result to the Maryland Department of the Environment about how those practices improve the environment may become members of the Maryland Green Registry, Gov. Martin O'Malley (D) announced Sept. 30. The registry is a voluntary self-certification program designed to promote and recognize environmental improvement efforts by organizations of all types and sizes in Maryland. According to O'Malley, nearly 80 members already have qualified since June. To become a member, a business or organization must complete a best-practices profile. Checklists on the Maryland Green Registry's website offer examples of practices that would qualify in the areas of environmental management, waste reduction, energy and water conservation, transportation, and green building design. Once an application is approved, members receive a Green Registry window decal, may use the “Maryland Green” logo, and get their profiles posted on the registry's website. Members also get free technical and informational assistance to help implement additional environmental best practices and may update their profiles annually. More information on the Maryland Green Registry is available at http://www.mde.maryland.gov/MarylandGreen/default.htm.
